Lagos State has
grown to become
Nigeria's most
buoyant state in
Nigeria. Its
progress,
development and
growth emanate
both from its
dynamism as the
nations
commercial/cultural
melting pot and
from the
commendable
foresight of
successive
administrations
that had
governed the
state. Lagos
State proudly
displays
prominent
characteristics
that distinguish
it from other
administrative
and political
units in
Nigeria, Abuja
inclusive. The
states obvious
achievements
have made it
qualify for a
leading position
among the
foremost modern
industrial
settlements in
Africa.
Lagos State lies to the
southwestern part of the
Federal Republic of
Nigeria on the West
Coast of Africa. It has
boundaries with Ogun
state both in the North
and East. It is also
bounded in the West by
the Republic of Benin
and in the south, it
stretches for over 180
kilometers along the
Coast of the Atlantic
Ocean. It is pertinent
to note that despite its
sprawling population,
constant reconstruction,
renovation and incessant
traffic jams, Lagos
still offers a lot of
satisfaction to visitors
and its inhabitants.
This is because it has
its own unique
attractions which have
made a lot of people
develop a romantic
attachment for the City
and choose to remain or
return to Lagos despite
all odds.
The city is famous for
its multidimensional
cultural heritage with
the major occupation of
the inhabitants being
fishing. However muchof
the city’s economic
strength arises from the
situation of a large
number of industries,
and the new
technologies, as well as
from financial service,
the media industries and
major tourist
attractions.
Lagos is a bustling, social city with varying traditional
festivals, carnivals and
other attractions such
as theatres, cinema
house, and other
cultural attractions.
With a vibrant
administration at the
canter, supported by 57
Local Government areas
of which the Ikorodu
Local Government that
hosts the main Campus of
the Polytechnic is one.
In 1975, the Lagos State
Government decided to
approve the
establishment of a
College of Science and
Technology as the
first Lagos State owned
tertiary institution.
The Lagos State Edict No
1 of 1978 effective from
1st June, 1977 gave the
college its legal
existence. In January
1978, classes commenced
at a temporary site, now
the Isolo Campus of the
Institution. In 1986,
the Lagos State
Government changed the
name of the Institution
from the Lagos State
College of Science and
Technology to the Lagos
State Polytechnic.
The Polytechnic is
concluding efforts to
move from its hitherto
Multi Campus nature to a
monocampus Institution.
Sequel to the movement
of the seat of
Administration to the
Ikorodu permanent
Campus, the Polytechnic
was operating a
multi-campus system with
four campuses namely,
Ikorodu, Ikosi, Isolo
and Surulere, all
located within Lagos
metropolis. With effect
from May 2000, the
Ikorodu Campus took over
from the Isolo Campus as
the seat of
administration of the
Polytechnic and the
Permanent Campus of the
Institution.
Since the giant step was
taken in year 2000 the
institution has moved
virtually all its
Schools and Departments,
while plans are also at
advanced stages to move
the few remaining
Departments and Schools
to the Ikorodu Campus in
the nearest future. It
is pertinent to note
that the Polytechnic
will still retain the
Isolo Campus as the
School of Part Time
Studies, in view of its
proximity to the major
clientele for the
programme, who are
largely situated in the
Lagos metropolis.
The 2004/2005 Academic
Session saw the
establishment of the
School of Part Time
Studies (Day) at the
Surulere Campus which
hitherto was the School
of Environmental Studies
of the Polytechnic. The
Ikorodu Permanent Campus
situated along the
Sagamu Road has an
expanse of over 400
hectares of land, a
large percentage of
which is yet to be
developed. A beautiful,
serene and conducive
environment for teaching
and learning with no
doubt. The overall
quality of the
Polytechnic has rated
the institution as the
best State owned
Polytechnic in Nigeria,
and the Polytechnic of
excellence, from the
various assessment
processes it had
undergone.
Its record as a research
institution of National
and International repute
is acknowledged by
government,
international agencies,
industry and other stake
holders. However, far
from resting on its
oars, the Polytechnic is
determined to
consolidate its position
on the National and
International stage.
